Flies in the face of disease
The humble Australian fly could hold the key to fighting diseases.
Australian scientists are studying the surface of flies in the hope that they discover antibiotics. They said flies had strong antimicrobial defences against rotting food and dung.
The scientists examined four different types of the creatures and their different life stages: house fly, sheep blowfly, Queensland fruit fly, and vinegar fruit fly.
They found antibacterial properties on the surface of all four species which will ultimately be synthesised for human use.
