Hi HJC; how are you today? |

Does anyone have any questions or points they want to discuss about today's topic? |

what causes thrush? |
| |
|
It's caused by an overgrowth of an organism called Candida, which is normally presnt in the body, including the vagina. |
| |
|
When there's too much of it, it can cause a discharge, itch and irritation. |
| |
HJC |
why does it keep on recurring?
|
| |
|
We don't always know the cause for each outbreak of thrush, but it commonly comes on after a course of antibiotics and it's a frequent complication of diabetes. |
| |
|
Again, we don't always know why it keeps coming back. In some instances it's because of diabetes or immune system problems. Sometimes it seems to be related to hormones, the pill or pregnancy. But most of the time, we just don't know why some women get lots of outbreaks. |

wha tis the most effective treatment |
| |
Maurie |
How is it treated? |
| |
Maurie |
I've heard about a once off tretment, is that as effective as other longer term treatments? |
| |
|
The most common treatment is with anti-fungal creams or pessaries, inserted into the vagina. This works well for most women. It seems to work better if it's continued daily for a week rather tha as a one-off high dose. |
| |
|
In some cases, the thrush keeps coming back despite repeated courses of vaginal creams and pessaries - for these women, oral medication usually is effective. |
| |
Maurie |
Is the thrush you can get in your mouth the same organism? |
| |
HJC |
i didn;t find they worked ,for me.i took a diflucan tablet, which worked last yr,but hasn;t worked so far this yr. |
| |
|
Yes, it's the same organism. Again, it's more likely to occur if you are on antibiotic or immune-suppressant medication. |
| |
|
HJC, are you sure that it's the same condition? Maybe your symptoms this year are due to a different diagnosis? |
| |
HJC |
what else could it be? |
| |
Jane |
How much is diflucan? - it's pricey I think |
| |
Jane |
? The cost at the pharamcyonline
|
| |
HJC |
$33 Jane.. |
| |
|
other conditions that can cause vaginal itch and irritation include skin conditions such as dermatitis, or sometimes other infectiuons such as herpes (which is frequently misdiagnosed as thrush) |

|
Thanks HJC. Unfortunately fluconazole is expensive. The eMedical pharmacy has it fairly cheaply at $21 |
| |
HJC |
do u have a white discharge with herpes? |
| |
|
You need a precription, of course, and it's important to talk to your doctor about side effects and interactions. |
| |
|
There's not usually a white discharge with herpes. A discharge can occur with other infections lke bacterial vaginosis and trichomoniasis. And for some women it's normal to have a discharge from time to time. |
| |
|
That's why it's really important to confirm the diagnosis with a thorough examination and tests (swabs) from the vagina |
| |
|
...a lot of people use treatment that's essentially useless because they think they're treating thrush but actually it's something else. |
| |
HJC |
i have suffered from kidney infection,is there an antibiotic ,that won;t give u thrush? |
| |
|
It depends on the nature of the kidney infection. Augmentin, which is a very good antibiotic for urinary tract infections, but may cause severe thrush. On the other hand, trimethoprim doesn't seem to cause so many problems. |
| |
HJC |
do u think diet has a bearing on trush? |
| |
|
Sometimes you have to accept that the best antibiotic is the one that will give you thrush and take antifungal treatment in anticipation of problems. |
| |
|
As far as I'm aware, there's no firm, objective scientific evidence that diet affects thrush - having siad that, though, I've talked to a lot of women who say their thrush is much better since cutting out yeast, beer, bread, etc - so maybe it's worth a try |
| |
|
Bear in mind that the yeast that we eat is different from the yeast (Candida) that causes thrush. Also, remember there's *always* Candida in the body, particularly the bowel - no diet will eradicate it all |
| |
HJC |
i have been on yeast and sugar free diet for 3 yrs... |
| |
|
So obviously in your case it hasn't been the answer, if you're still getting thrush. |
| |
|
If it is, in fact, thrush. Have you had swabs taken to confirm the diagnosis? |
| |
HJC |
since having thrush ,i have lost 2 stone in weight, never feel like eating.. |
| |
|
That's probably not due to the thrush - although reducing sugar and yeast might have reduced your carbohydrate intake, causing the weight loss. |
| |
|
HJC, I'm afraid I need to leave in a couple of minutes. Do you have any final questions? |
| |
|
Thanks for joining the chat today. Feel free to use the message boards or onlione consulting if you have further questions. |

Goodbye. |
