PREDMIX ORAL LIQUID

Prednisolone sodium phosphate
Consumer Medicine Information

What is in this leaflet

This leaflet answers some common questions about PredMix Oral Liquid. It does not contain all the available information.

It does not take the place of talking to your doctor and pharmacist.

All medicines have risks and benefits. Your doctor has weighed the risks of you taking PredMix Oral Liquid against the benefits they expect it will have for you.

If you have any concerns about taking this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Keep this leaflet with the medicine.

You may need to read it again.

What is PredMix Oral Liquid and what is it used for

PredMix Oral Liquid contains prednisolone sodium phosphate which is broken down to prednisolone after it enters the body.

Prednisolone works by entering inflammatory cells and blocking the inflammatory reaction. It is only able to prevent or reduce symptoms of your condition, it does not cure it.

Prednisolone belongs to a group of medicines called corticosteroids. It is similar to a hormone called cortisol which is produced naturally by the body. It is not like the steroids which are sometimes used by athletes to build up their bodies.

PredMix Oral Liquid is used to prevent or reduce the symptoms of inflammation (such as swelling, redness, pain, tenderness or itching) in any part of the body.

The most common condition for which PredMix Oral Liquid is prescribed is asthma. In this condition the breathing tubes to the lungs are inflamed. This causes narrowing of the breathing tubes and lots of mucus, leading to cough, wheeze, trouble in breathing and shortness of breath. Sometimes medicines given to make the breathing tubes wider (bronchodilators/ relievers) will be enough to make you better. However, often your doctor will also prescribe PredMix Oral Liquid to reduce the inflammation.

There are other conditions, such as some forms of arthritis, where PredMix Oral Liquid is an important part of treatment, either for short or long periods of time. Other conditions where PredMix Oral Liquid may be used include: severe allergies, skin problems, inflammatory diseases of the bowel, cancer and `auto-immune` diseases.

Your doctor may have prescribed PredMix Oral Liquid for another reason. Ask your doctor if you have any questions about why PredMix Oral Liquid has been prescribed for you.

This medicine is available only with a doctor`s prescription.

There is no evidence that PredMix Oral Liquid is addictive.

How to take PredMix Oral Liquid

How much to take

Your doctor will tell you how much PredMix Oral Liquid to take. The dose of PredMix Oral Liquid prescribed by your doctor will depend on the condition being treated and your response to treatment. Your initial dose will be maintained or adjusted until a satisfactory response is noted.

Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and pharmacist carefully.

These directions may differ from the information contained in this leaflet.

If you do not understand the instructions on the bottle, ask your doctor or pharmacist for help.

How to take it

PredMix Oral Liquid comes as a liquid. You can mix the correct dose of PredMix Oral Liquid with milk, cordial, soft drink or soft food, or you can take it by itself. Do not add anything to the PredMix Oral Liquid bottle itself. You will soon know how you prefer to take the medicine.

When to take it

PredMix Oral Liquid is usually taken once a day. Sometimes it is taken every second day or more than once a day, depending on the condition being treated.

If you take it once a day or every second day, then it is best taken at breakfast time. If it needs to be taken more than once a day, then space it out during the day.

PredMix Oral Liquid does not need to be taken with food, though you may prefer to take it at mealtimes so you can eat or drink something following the medicine.

How long to take it

This will depend on your condition and on your response to treatment. Your doctor will give you exact instructions for how long to take it.

Do not stop taking your PredMix Oral Liquid or miss any doses even if you are feeling better as this may make your symptoms worse.

If you forget to take it

If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the dose you missed and take your next dose when you are meant to.
Otherwise, take it as soon as you remember, and then go back to taking your mixture as you would normally.

If you are not sure whether to skip the dose, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

Do not take a double dose to make up for the dose that you missed.

If you have trouble remembering to take your tablets, ask your pharmacist for some hints.

If you take too much (overdose)

Immediately telephone your doctor or Poisons Information Centre (telephone 13 11 26), or go to casualty at your nearest hospital, if you think that you or anyone else may have taken too much PredMix Oral Liquid. Do this even if there are no signs of discomfort or poisoning. You may need urgent medical attention. Keep telephone numbers of these places/services handy.
