What Chem mart Amoxycillin and Clavulanic Acid is used for

This medicine contains two active ingredients, called amoxycillin and clavulanic acid. Amoxycillin is a type of penicillin antibiotic. Clavulanic acid is used to increase the effectiveness of the amoxycillin against certain types of bacteria.

Amoxycillin and clavulanic acid is used to treat a wide range of infections caused by bacteria. These infections may affect the chest (bronchitis or pneumonia), bladder (cystitis), sinuses (sinusitis), ears (otitis media) or skin.

Amoxycillin and clavulanic acid works by killing the bacteria that cause these infections. Amoxycillin and clavulanic acid will not work against infections such as colds or the flu, which are caused by viruses.

Your doctor may have prescribed amoxycillin and clavulanic acid for another reason.

Ask your doctor if you have any questions about why amoxycillin and clavulanic acid has been prescribed for you.

This medicine is only available with a doctor`s prescription.

There is no evidence that amoxycillin and clavulanic acid is addictive.

How to take Chem mart Amoxycillin and Clavulanic Acid

Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and pharmacist carefully.

These directions may differ from the information contained in this leaflet.

If you do not understand the instructions on the pack, ask your doctor or pharmacist for help.

How much to take

Your doctor or pharmacist will tell you how many tablets you will need to take each day. The usual dose of amoxycillin and clavulanic acid is one tablet twice a day (approximately every twelve hours).

How to take it

Swallow the amoxycillin and clavulanic acid tablet with a full glass of water.

Tablets may be broken in half, but should not be chewed.

When to take it

Amoxycillin and clavulanic acid should be taken immediately before or with the first mouthful of food. Amoxycillin and clavulanic acid works best when taken this way. It may also help to prevent stomach upsets. However, amoxycillin and clavulanic acid will still work if it is taken without food.

Space the doses as evenly as possible throughout the day. If you are taking amoxycillin and clavulanic acid twice a day, take a dose about every twelve hours.

How long to take it

Keep taking amoxycillin and clavulanic acid until the course is finished or for as long as your doctor recommends.

Do not stop taking amoxycillin and clavulanic acid just because you feel better.

If you do not complete the full course prescribed by your doctor, all of the bacteria causing your infection may not be killed. These bacteria may continue to grow and multiply so that your infection may not clear completely or it may return.

If you forget to take it

If your next dose is due within six hours, skip the dose you missed and take your next dose at the normal time. Otherwise, take the missed dose as soon as you remember and then go back to taking your tablets as you would normally.

Do not take a double dose to make up for the dose that you have missed.

This may increase the chance of you getting an unwanted side effect.

If you have trouble remembering to take your tablets, ask your pharmacist for some hints.

If you take too much (Overdose)

Immediately telephone your doctor or the Poisons Information Centre (13 11 26), or go to the Accident and Emergency department at your nearest hospital if you think that you or anyone else may have taken too much amoxycillin and clavulanic acid. Do this even if there are no signs of discomfort or poisoning. Be sure to show the doctor the Chem mart Amoxycillin and Clavulanic Acid pack.

You may need urgent medical attention.

Symptoms of overdose of amoxycillin and clavulanic acid may include nausea, vomiting, cramps and diarrhoea.

If you become pregnant while you are taking amoxycillin and clavulanic acid tell your doctor immediately.

If you have to have any blood or urine tests, tell your doctor you are taking amoxycillin and clavulanic acid.

Amoxycillin and clavulanic acid may affect the results of some tests.
