What Chem mart Moclobemide is used for

The name of your medicine is Moclobemide. It contains the active ingredient called moclobemide.

Moclobemide is used to treat depression. Moclobemide belongs to a group of medicines called Reversible Inhibitors of Monoamine Oxidase A.

Depression is longer lasting and/or more severe than the “low moods” everyone has from time to time due to the stress of everyday life. It is thought to be caused by a chemical imbalance in parts of the brain. This imbalance affects your whole body and can cause emotional and physical symptoms such as feeling low in spirit, loss of interest in activities, being unable to enjoy life, poor appetite or overeating, disturbed sleep, often waking up early, loss of sex drive, lack of energy and feeling guilty over nothing.

Moclobemide helps to correct this chemical imbalance and may help relieve the symptoms of depression.

Your doctor may have prescribed Moclobemide for another reason. Ask your doctor if you have any questions about why Moclobemide has been prescribed for you.

This medicine is available only with a doctor`s prescription.

Moclobemide is not recommended for use in children, as there have been no studies of its effects in children.

If you take this medicine after the expiry date has passed, it may not work as well.

    Taking other medicines

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including any that you buy without a prescription from your pharmacy, supermarket or health food shop.

Some medicines and Moclobemide may interfere with each other. These include:

  • cimetidine, an antiulcer drug
  • dextromethorphan, a cough suppressant (ingredient in some cold & flu preparations)
  • pethidine, a pain reliever
  • other antidepressant medicines such as fluoxetine, paroxetine, sertraline, amitriptyline or nortriptyline
  • serotonin agonists (sumatriptan)

How to take Chem mart Moclobemide

Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and pharmacist carefully.

These directions may differ from the information contained in this leaflet.

    How much to take

Your doctor will tell you how many Moclobemide tablets to take each day. The usual dose is between 300 mg and 600 mg per day.

If you do not understand the instructions on the box, ask your doctor or pharmacist for help.

    How to take it

Tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water.

If you are changing from one antidepressant to another, follow your doctor`s instructions carefully and report any unexpected effects if they occur.

    When to take it

Moclobemide tablets are usually taken twice daily after meals

    How long to take it

For depression, the length of treatment will depend on how quickly your symptoms improve. Most antidepressants take time to work so don`t be discouraged if you don`t feel better right away. Some of your symptoms may improve in 1 or 2 weeks but it can take up to 4 or 6 weeks to feel any real improvement. Even when you feel well, you will usually have to take Moclobemide for several months or even longer to make sure the benefits will last. Continue taking it until your doctor tells you to stop.

If you forget to take it

If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the dose you missed and take your next dose when you are meant to. Otherwise, take it as soon as you remember, and then go back to taking your medicine as you would normally.

Do not take a double dose to make up for the dose that you missed.

If you are not sure what to do, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

If you take too much (overdose)

Immediately telephone your doctor or pharmacist or the Poisons Information Centre (telephone 13 11 26), or go to Accident and Emergency at your nearest hospital, if you think that you or anyone else may have taken too much moclobemide. Do this even if there are no signs of discomfort or poisoning.

If you have taken too much moclobemide you may get nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, slurred speech, high blood pressure and convulsions (fits). You may need urgent medical attention.
